Modinagar

Modinagar is a town in Ghaziabad district and constituency number 57 of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly. After the 2008 delimitation it is an assembly segment of the Baghpat Lok Sabha constituency. The settlement was once called Begumabad. In 1933 Rai Bahadur Gujarmal Modi opened a sugar mill here. In 1945 the industrial township took the name Modinagar.

The town is inside the National Capital Region, about 25 kilometres from Ghaziabad and about 45 kilometres from Delhi. It sits on National Highway 58, the Delhi–Meerut road, between those two cities. The railway station is a stop for trains from Delhi toward Meerut, Haridwar, and Dehradun. The PIN code is 201204.

Sudesh Sharma’s home and his public work belong to this seat. He was chairman of the municipal board here from 2007 to 2012, and MLA from March 2012 to March 2017. His work on the town’s roads, fields, and among its people still goes on.

An industrial town

The settlement grew from Gujarmal Modi’s sugar mill. About twenty thousand people once worked in the textile mills. In the 1980s many of those mills closed, and unpaid dues became a long question for the town. Sugar and the fields are still part of the economy. The town is also home to families who travel toward Delhi.

Road, rail, and Namo Bharat

National Highway 58 and the Delhi–Saharanpur rail line tie the town to Ghaziabad, Meerut, and Delhi. In October 2023 the Sahibabad to Modinagar North section of the Delhi–Meerut Namo Bharat line opened. The town now sits between Delhi and Meerut on that fast line as well. Schools and colleges have grown here because it lies in the National Capital Region.

The municipal board

In 2011 the Nagar Palika Parishad had 26 wards and 24,777 households. From 2007 to 2012 Sudesh Sharma was its chairman. Roads, wards, and the daily work of the town run from that chair. His diploma in civil engineering is the language of that work.

Mill workers and the fields

In February 2014, as MLA, he placed the unpaid dues of workers at the closed Modi textile mill before the Assembly. He told the House that about ₹60 crore was still outstanding. He is himself a farmer. The sugarcane and fields of western Uttar Pradesh are the ground of his public life.

Young people and public programmes

He stands with young people on the sports field and at the town’s honour ceremonies. In January 2026, on his birthday, young people and supporters came to his home in Modinagar. Both offices, the municipal board and the Assembly, were here, and he is still at the town’s programmes.
